MMYPEM took part in the commissioning tasks of the two combined cycles that Endesa built in Granadilla (Tenerife). The first of them was inaugurated in 2006 while the second one in 2011. With the start-up of the complete cycle, Endesa’s power at the Granadilla power station adds another 230 megawatts (Mw) more, reaching a total of 743. The total installed capacity of Endesa in the Island is currently 1,059 Mw, 71.1% of the total installed capacity is at the plant of Granadilla. The first one was inaugurated in 2006. It is a technology conceived to use with natural gas, fuel that will allow to diversify the energy production in Canary Islands. The combined cycle is ready to operate either as a closed cycle or as an open cycle, that is, using exclusively the two gas turbines. This functionality allows that the development of the project and the expansion of the island’s generation park could be staggered in time in order to optimize the coverage of the electrical Energy demand and thereby improve the stability of the island’s electrical system.
Such production groups use open sea water for cooling and comply with all the environmental requirements established in both European and Spanish legislation. The combined cycle will enable the entry of natural gas into the Archipelago, as the viability of the use of this fuel in the Islands passes through its use in the generation of electric energy, activity to which it will be mainly destined.
